A drain that's slow to clear can wait until tomorrow. These symptoms cannot:

• Gurgling in another drain when you flush the toilet — the horizontal run is blocked and air is escaping through a different outlet.
• Persistent bad smell in the bathroom or kitchen — the trap is no longer working as a barrier because water has stopped flowing.
• Dirty water backing up into the shower or sink —: it will overflow within hours.
• Continuous gurgling in the soil stack — the main stack in the building is partially blocked.
• Damp patch on the ceiling or wall near an upstairs bathroom — the blockage may have forced a joint open and water may be leaking.

Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) is what any hardware shop sells as a "quick drain cleaner". It's aggressive, cheap and looks like it works. It's also the product that generates the most damage and complaints we receive after the fact:

• It cracks elastomeric joints in PVC and polyethylene pipes. The joint never recovers. What was a blockage becomes an internal leak.
• It attacks copper in mixed pipework. Pitting corrosion appears with no warning.
• It pollutes the island's sewer network and carries a fine for the individual resident and the community.
• It doesn't remove the cause: solidified grease, roots or limescale return within weeks because caustic soda only "clears" the surface.
